Astra Lumina Los Angeles with Kids – Immersive Light Experience

Astra Lumina is an immersive light experience in the South Coast Botanical Garden in Palos Verdes. It’s a seasonal event that’s only open for a couple of months in the winter. Open at night time, it’s a path through the gardens with immersive light installations that are incredible beautiful.

Overview of Astra Lumina

Astra Lumina is an experience of light installations that are all over the United States. The one in the Los Angeles are is open from roughly November through March.

Located at the South Coast Botanic Garden, you walk through the gardens on a one-mile loop path. The dirt path is lit by lanterns that guide you the entire way. Throughout the path, there are 9 immersive light installations. Some installations are sculptures to look at, while others immerse you in light as you walk through. There’s also music playing throughout the entire path that syncs up with the lights, creating a show that fills up the whole environment.

Parking

There is are two parking lots available:

  • Preferred Parking: In the main parking lot at the entrance of the garden. Cost is $20 and must be purchased as an add-on at the time of ticket purchase.
  • Offsite Parking: There’s an offsite parking lot 2 miles away at 602 Deep Valley Dr, Rolling Hills Estates. It costs $8, with includes shuttle service to the Garden.

There is no street parking available near the South Coast Botanic Garden.

Operating Hours

Open Thursday – Sundays from 5:30pm-10:00pm. Last ticketed entry is 9:00pm.

Facilities – Water & Restrooms

There are restrooms and water fountains at the entrance of the botanical gardens. There are no other restrooms on the one-mile loop. At the entrance, and midway on the path, hot cocoa is available for purchase.


Tips When Visiting

  • Bundle up. It gets cold walking outdoors at night, especially with the location being in the hills near the ocean.
  • The dirt path is mostly smooth with minimal inclines. However, it can be bumpy and difficult for strollers or wheelchairs. Ensure that your stroller or wheelchair is all-terrain.
  • The path is only a mile, but might be long for some kids. Get ready to carry younger ones.
  • Take your time and enjoy each installation. It actually goes faster than you expect.
